Kim Phuc

A Film by Manus van de Kamp

During the war that devastated her country, Kim Phuc was caught in a napalm attack. A picture of her running naked down a country road, her skin seared, became world famous. At the height of the Vietnam War, this transcendant image served to remind all of the senseless horror of war.

KIM PHUC is the story of that girl, mutilated by the war, now a young woman trying to surmount the effects of the disaster which befell her. Viewers relive with her the tragedy of the past, and learn of the problems she has faced in the intervening years, all the while sharing the spirit with which she is prepared to face the future - she asks that "At the end of the film, you must no longer talk about napalm and such things. You must show beautiful things, for that's what people need. And the most beautiful thing of all is a sunset in Vietnam."

"The unhealed wounds of Vietnam are also shown - poverty, malnourished and seriously ill children, and injured adults and children. Although the film depicts an optimistic Kim as well as beautiful scenes of Vietnam, it clearly shows that the healing will take a long time and may never be complete. A graphic illustration of the horrors of war and how these horrors linger long after many have forgotten. Recommended for all audiences." - L.M. Easterday, Choice

"Scenes of past and present Vietnam, native music, and a shifting narrative viewpoint contribute to the power of the program, but its visual impact and piteous content need no reinforcement." - William Ward, Booklist

"To see the world famous still photographs come to life in this film will be an emotional experience for many who were there, and now, shocked by the horror suffered by so many in Vietnam." - Landers Film Reviews

"Given the current revisionist climate, it's bracing in a particularly awful way to reencounter these images. I'd like to make this the mandatory short feature for RAMBO." - J. Hoberman, Village Voice
