119 Bullets + Three

Directed by Yeud Levanon & Amit Goren

film still

The November 4, 1995 assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin riveted the world's attention to the conflict between Israel's religious and secular Jews over the essence of Zionism and, by extension, the future of the country's cultural and political identity.

119 BULLETS + THREE begins in Hebron with the 1994 Cave of the Patriarchs massacre. Dr. Baruch Goldstein, a settler and member of the extremist group Kach, fired 119 bullets into the backs of praying Muslims, killing 39. For 18 months afterward, filmmakers Yeud Levanon and Amit Goren recorded fanatic religious ideologues in the West Bank settlements. They gained access to the homes and meeting places of these driven men, capturing shockingly intimate and candid portraits of Israelis who seemed ready to oppose the peace process at any cost, including the murders of fellow Jews. And then in Tel Aviv, Yigal Amir, a law student, fired three bullets into Yitzhak Rabin's back - an action motivated by religious extremism.

The assassination has created a deep fear among Israelis about the fate of pluralism and democracy in their country. Will the nation's fabric be torn apart by these zealots who vow not to rest until the land is governed under their interpretation of the Torah's laws? As it journeys from Tel Aviv to Hebron, where the model of a second Israel already exists, 119 BULLETS + THREE addresses incendiary issues that may determine the future of Israel - and the Middle East.

"A truly explosive political documentary."—Pierre-Henri Deleau, Director General, FIPA 96

"A frighteningly effective job, revealing the monstrous smugness of fanatics who pretend to be God's exclusive emissaries on earth."—Dan Fainaru, Editor, European Film Reviews
