Morocco, Body and Soul

Hymns of Praise

A Film by Izza Genini

Part of the MOROCCO, BODY AND SOUL series of half hour films which present various musical genres being performed in the environments which fostered them, all the while giving viewers a window into the diverse components which comprise Moroccan society.

Located between Volubilis and Meknes, the shrine of Moulay Idriss the First, founder of the Islamic kingdom of Morocco, is the site of one of the most important religious pilgrimages. The Sufi brotherhood of the Alamiyines inaugurates the ceremonies with the khamra that leads the followers through more and more breathless phases to an ecstatic state. During the following eight days, the brotherhoods, with their offerings, walk in procession to the shrine, to the rhythm of the drums and oboes.
