Hamburger: Jungleburger

A Film by Peter Heller

film still

Focusing on the cattle raising and meat export businesses in Costa Rica, JUNGLEBURGER examines the impact of the fast food industry on Third World countries.

Disturbing trends are investigated in this report: meat consumption per capita is falling while production and export of meat is rising; small farmers are being evicted to make more land available to livestock; chemicals and herbicides which increase beef yields are adversely affecting the public health. And Costa Rica's rainforests are being cleared for grazing at a rate so drastic that experts predict this country, once covered by rainforests, may have to import timber within twenty years. This large-scale rainforest destruction would have a profound effect not only on Costa Rica's environment, but the entire planet's.

"An informative warning that the impact of fast food industries on Third World countries is having far-reaching consequences. Recommended."—Landers Film & Video Reviews
