Banguza Timbila

Directed by Ron Hallis

A window into Mozambique's rich musical heritage, 10 timbila players and fifteen dancers perform in a show telling the story of Mozambique's struggle for independence.

Ten players of hand-made timbilas (similar to marimbas) and fifteen dancers perform an exciting composition in homage to the FRELIMO led revolution in Mozambique. The concert is held in the remote town of Banguza, in the forest region of Zavala, Mozambique.

In the course of an upbeat, instrumental, very jazzy piece, the performers also recount a modern-day Mozambican story - shortly after the revolutionary war against the Portuguese a priest was apprehended with a cache of guns; he is brought before the new president, Samora Machel, scolded, and banished.

BANGUZA TIMBILA is a unique opportunity to share in, and enjoy, the rich musical heritage of Mozambique.
