Art and Remembrance: The Legacy of Felix Nussbaum

A Film by Barbara Pfeffer

film still

Using Felix Nussbaum's paintings to tell about the Holocaust, ART & REMEMBRANCE's unique presentation makes this a deeply moving and important film.

While in hiding in Brussels, Nussbaum created the major body of work about the Jews during the Holocaust. Shortly before the liberation of Brussels, he was captured, put on the last transport to Auschwitz, and murdered.

Twenty-five years later, the hidden paintings were discovered. Today Felix Nussbaum is recognized as one of the great artists of his time.

The film, demonstrating the power of art to reach young people, ends in present day Berlin as students engage in a moving and revealing discussion about their country's past.

"Both Nussbaum's paintings and the story of his life evoke strong emotions, as this moving production paints his tragic portrait." - Nancy McCray, Booklist

"Academic libraries with strong holdings in modern European history, Judaica, or 20th century art will find ART AND REMEMBRANCE a valuable addition to their collections. [It] should be extremely useful for school libraries, especially in classes devoted to contemporary issues, multicultural studies, or World War II." - Graham Maughan, Video Rating Guide for Libraries
